In the news
By Times staff writer 'Last Call' not answeredEntertainment deals are often made with a handshake, but NBC and its new late-night host, Carson Daly, were shaking fists at each other Monday night over an unsigned contract that led to the pre-emption of the premiere of Daly's show, Last Call. NBC promoted the show heavily for weeks, and Daly, host of MTV's Total Request Live, taped the first one Monday. Viewers saw a repeat of SCTV instead. NBC Entertainment president Jeff Zucker ordered the switch at 1:32 a.m. Tuesday, three minutes before Last Call was to go on the air. He decided Daly could not go on without a signed contract. Zucker declined to comment Tuesday night. The New York Times, citing two senior NBC executives it did not identify, said Zucker acted after Daly's representatives continued to insist on contract changes even though they had verbally agreed to terms. Tuesday, Zucker warned that the show would be canceled if Daly failed to sign by that night, the New York Times said. Daly signed about 6:30 p.m. "All the issues are resolved," he said. The show was scheduled to be broadcast as planned at 1:35 a.m. Wednesday. Movie notesWhoopi Goldberg will host this year's Oscar ceremony March 24. It will be her fourth time as emcee. . . .
