Lancers toss four no-hitters

TAMPA -- Seminole Presbyterian baseball coach J.J. Pizzio hasn't seen anything like it in all his years in baseball. Lancers athletic director Frank Mabry called it "unreal."

Monday against Shorecrest, Kim Rolley led the Lancers' softball team to an 11-0 win, allowing no hits in the six-inning game and facing one batter over the minimum thanks to a walk in the last inning.

Rolley followed that no-hitter with another Tuesday against Oldsmar Christian, when she carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before walking another batter. The Lancers (5-1) won that game 13-0.

"She's on fire," Mabry said. "I told her she could be pitching to mannequins and it would still be unreal."

Even though back-to-back no-hitters are amazing, that's only half of the story.

As Rolley was performing her heroics Monday, Mark Brown was throwing his own no-hitter for the baseball team. Brown walked three and struck out six in the 10-0 win against Keswick Christian.

The next day was Justin Craig's turn to get in on the hitless action as he held Tampa Baptist to no hits in a five-inning 16-0 victory.

The tally: Two days, three different pitchers, four games, no hits.

"I've never even seen two no-hitters in the same season and I was a scorekeeper for 10 years for the Yankees," Pizzio said. "I scored two (no-hitters) in the Florida State League the whole time I was there."

DON'T FORGET DURANT: Plant might have grabbed some early headlines, charging out with an 8-0 record and winning a key district game Tuesday against Sickles.

But on the county's east side, Durant is making some noise of its own.

The Cougars are 8-1 and have three players hitting better than .300. Mike Grace leads the county with four home runs.

Durant also has a team ERA of 0.82, and the pitcher with the team's highest ERA, Ross Jackson, tops out at 1.50. Jackson has thrown a team-high 18.2 innings and has struck out 32 hitters.
