BROOKSVILLE -- Historically, Lecanto has not been a sprint school.

But after Thursday's Bear Relays, it might be time to revise history.

The Lecanto girls team ran its fastest 1,600 and 3,200 relays of the year and won eight events.

With only one event remaining, Lecanto led second-place Ridgewood 117-104. The pole vault was not complete at press time.

"I thought they ran well (Thursday)," Lecanto girls coach Freddie Bullock said. "Some of our splits were very good."

Lecanto's Stacey Lowe, Nicole Gasiorek, Amanda Howard and Kylene Colasanti won the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 18.96 seconds, surpassing their own county-best of 4:26.

Megs Brown, Dawn Prince, Colasanti and Wheeler won the sprint hurdles. Nicole Mailloux, Gasiorek, Deirdra Witherspoon and Howard won the distance medley.

Wheeler, Colasanti and Lowe again teamed up to win the high and triple jumps. Santana Huggett, Witherspoon, Mailloux and Howard won the 3,200 in 10:40.42.

Amy Rundio, Dan Munsell, Annemarie Saxer and Kyle Helt combined to win the coed 6,400 relay, and Angela Bowman, Michael Harris, Phillip Reed and Kari Porowski teamed up to win the coed weight-person's relay.

Wesley Chapel won the boys meet despite missing five basketball players.

Kenny Roberts anchored the winning sprint medley team, which also included Bernard Roberts, Nick Carter and Aaron Dickler. Anchor Kurt Able joined "Chuk" Ayetin, Rashawn Harris and Jonathan Muhammad on the first-place 1,600 relay squad.

Bernard Roberts, Carter, Dickler and Center placed second to South Sumter in the 400 relay.

"The kids worked hard all week and were kind of fired up about it," Wesley Chapel boys coach Brian Colding said. "It's not a normal individualized type of track meet. It's more relays, so they all kind of bonded together and said, "All right, this is my team."'

Pasco's Devean Hicks, Keymo Pearson and Garion Pope won the long jump with a combined distance of 58 feet, 8 inches. Pearson also teamed with Jay Brown and Dominique Dixon to win the high jump.

The Pirates' Lashawn Vaughns, Pearson, Shantell Burns and Thomas Hasley won the 800 coed relay.

Ridgewood's Adamm Oliver, Sean Syndra and Jason Krupinski won the shot put with a combined distance of 126-2. The Rams' Veronica Berrios, Tiffany Powell, Ashley Krupinski and Lizzie Sheritan won the girls 1,600 medley relay in 4:42.35.

Ridgewood's Crystal Phillips, Natricia Wade and Andrea Sablan won the girls discus with a combined distance of 275-11.

Kurt Lee, Nick Correa and David Hulme of Central took the pole vault with a combined height of 29-0.
