Country concert to rock Chasco
By BARBARA L. FREDRICKSEN, Times Staff Writer
Chasco Fiesta goes back into full swing today with a Fun Run, arts fiesta, softball tourney, boat parade and, to top it off, the Chasco Country Concert with headliner Phil Vassar. Vassar has long written Grammy-winning songs for such country luminaries as Alan Jackson, Collin Raye, Tim McGraw and Joe Dee Messina, but he decided to do his own album in 2000 and immediately topped the charts. Vassar wrote all 11 songs for his debut, self-titled album, including the No. 1 single Just Another Day in Paradise and the top 10 songs Carlene, Rose Bouquet, Six-Pack Summer and That's When I Love You. He wrote all 12 songs for his newest album, American Child. In the two years since, he has been nominated for awards by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. He won the ACM award for "Top New Male Vocalist." Billboard Magazine named him "Top New Country Artist of the Year," and Music Row magazine named him "Breakthrough Artist of the Year" in 2000. He has opened for McGraw and Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney and Messina. Tonight, his opening acts are the country rock group SixWire, Daniel Lee Martin and local favorites Wiley Fox. Gates open at 5:45 p.m., show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. In other events, registration for the Alzheimer's Family Organization races starts at 7 a.m. at Green Key Beach. The registration fee of $20 includes refreshments, goody bags and T-shirts. Races include 5K and 8K road races, 10K inline skate, 25K, 40K and 90K bicycle tours and 1-mile FunRun/Walk. Cyclists are required to wear helmets, and cycling is not a race.
