Flurry of filers try to beat deadline

Some people filing returns at the last minute say they have to pay or were seeking an extension.

Excuses flowed as steady as envelopes Tuesday at post offices around Pasco County as procrastinators rushed to mail their income taxes before Tuesday's midnight deadline.

At the Embassy Crossing Branch of the post office in Port Richey, patrons shuffled inside after 5 p.m.

A sign above a slot said IRS forms entered there before midnight would be postmarked April 15.

"This is wonderful," Hilda Igor of New Port Richey said of the site's late hours as she sealed her envelopes. "This is the first time (filing at the last minute) because I have to pay."

Charles Henry of New Port Richey was determined not to file late. He was filing for an extension. The reason? Some needed tax documents were in boxes in his house after a recent move to Florida.

"I haven't found all my paperwork yet," he said before mailing his extension forms. "Stupidity is my middle name."

At the Land O'Lakes post office, people had other reasons for waiting until Tuesday.

"Actually, I like mailing it out late because I owe money," said Beth McCoy of Land O'Lakes.

Dorothy Murphy , 37, of Land O'Lakes said she doesn't usually mail her tax returns this late.

"I bought a house, so I had a lot of extra things to work out," she said.

Others blamed ignorance.

"I don't make any money. I didn't know I had to file because I don't have a job," said Dan Sidwell of Tampa at the post office in Wesley Chapel.

A student at the University of South Florida, his parents live in Wesley Chapel.

"I was taking money out of a mutual fund." Sidwell said. "Tax guy prepared them so all I had to do was sign my name."
