Seven Springs, Weightman win track titlesBy STEVE LEE, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published April 16, 2003 NEW PORT RICHEY -- Rain cut short the Pasco County Middle School Athletic Conference track meet by seven events. Inclement weather, however, did not dampen celebrations by the Seven Springs girls and Weightman boys after Wednesday's meet at Mitchell High. Administrators convened before declaring those teams champions despite the cancellation of four boys and three girls events. "We were running into rain for a little bit," conference secretary Joe Wajerski said. "Then the monsoon hit, so we called it." For Weightman's boys, it was the fifth title in the past six years. The Wildcats won one event -- the 400-meter relay -- but finished with 49 points, ahead of runner-up Bayonet Point (41.5 points) and third-place Centennial (40). "We were very surprised," said Weightman coach Tom Mine, who added that he expected the team to finish between third and fifth. "The bottom line is we competed in eight of 12 events and we won." Weightman's Mario Jenkins, Vince Chelecki, Arsenio Roberts and Jonathan Heiser won the 400 relay in 49.18 seconds. "It was pouring rain and every one of our (baton) changes was perfect," Mine said. Centennial's Marquis Burns had three wins -- high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), 110 hurdles (15.63 seconds) and 100 (12.28). Chasco's Leon Holmes won two events -- shot put (43-11/4) and discus (129-31/2). The other boys winners were Bayonet Point's Sean Gillespie (18-41/2 in the long jump) and Pine View's Thomas Spock in the 1,600 (5:15.00). The Seven Springs girls won five of nine events for their first conference title. The Jaguars scored 85 points, and Centennial (53) and Hudson (51) finished two points apart. Seven Springs' Ashley Stager won three events -- shot put (29-3/4"), discus (89-3) and high jump (4-10). Stager's teammate Tenisha Dixon won the long jump (15-51/2) before joining Rebekah Stockowski, Danielle Scott and Angela Harshman to win the 400 relay in 55.62. Centennial won three girls races. Jenny Jordan ran the 100 in 13.63, Deja Dukes finished the 1,600 in 6:03.40 and Jessica Karpe was first in the 400 with a 66.41. Hudson's Ashley Scheuring was the only girls winner not from Seven Springs or Centennial. Scheuring won the 110 hurdles in 17.72.
