EAST LANSING, Mich. - Duke's defense and balanced scoring turned the marquee matchup of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge into a classic rout.
Shelden Williams scored 16 to lead four Blue Devils in double figures, and No.6 Duke forced 20 turnovers in a 72-50 victory over No.5 Michigan State on Wednesday night.
Duke took control in the first half with a 20-2 run, during which the Spartans committed 17 turnovers.
"Our kids played an unbelievable game defensively," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "And I think we were efficient for the first time for a whole game on the offensive end."
The Blue Devils handed Michigan State its most lopsided loss at the Breslin Center since a 25-point setback against Minnesota in 1997 and its fifth home loss since the start of the 1998-99 season.
"We played scared," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "I've never seen anything like it."
Duke's J.J. Redick scored 13 and Shavlik Randolph 11, and Chris Duhon added 10 points and six assists.
Michigan State didn't have a player score in double figures. Chris Hill and Kelvin Torbert each scored eight.
When Duke didn't harass the Spartans into a turnover, it made it tough for them to make shots. The same was not true when the Blue Devils shot.
Duke shot 59.2 percent and held Michigan State to 40 percent.
The Spartans have begun arguably one of the toughest schedules in college basketball history. Michigan State, which lost to top-ranked Kansas last week, plays Oklahoma, Kentucky, Syracuse and UCLA before the Big Ten season starts.
NO.13 GA. TECH 73, OHIO ST. 53: B.J. Elder and Marvin Lewis combined for nine points in a 13-0 first-half run, and Isma'il Muhammad's high-wire dunk shifted the momentum in the second half to lead the visiting Yellow Jackets in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
It was Ohio State's worst loss in its six years in Value City Arena, where the Buckeyes went in 69-13, including 13-3 against ranked opponents.
NO.16 SYRACUSE 87, ST. BONAVENTURE 78: Hakim Warrick scored 27 and Billy Edelin added 20 to lead the Orangemen at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y.
Syracuse, which dropped nine spots in the AP poll after losing its opener to Charlotte and defeating Rhode Island by only four, beat the Bonnies for the 11th straight time.
NO.17 GONZAGA 86, WASH. 62: Cory Violette scored 15 and Tony Skinner and Blake Stepp had 14 each for the visiting Bulldogs.
Gonzaga won with steady defense, which only partly explained Washington's 31 percent shooting. The Huskies couldn't make a field goal over a 15-minute span during a 39-6 Gonzaga run that spanned halftime.
NO.20 PURDUE 76, CLEMSON 64: Kenneth Lowe scored 24 for the host Boilermakers, the only team that never had won in the five-year history of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Purdue (5-0), off to its best start in six years and coming off an upset of then-No.2 Duke, another ACC team, in the championship game of the Great Alaska Shootout last week, took control with an 18-4 run early in the first half.
NO.22 PITT 59, DUQUESNE 45: Carl Krauser scored 17 and keyed a decisive 20-5 run that started early in the second half, carrying the Panthers past their stubborn city rival.
Playing before the Dukes' first home sellout in nine years, Pittsburgh didn't begin pulling away until Krauser and Jaron Brown scored on consecutive steals and layups that made it 33-28 and started the run.
NO.25 OKLA. ST. 83, TEXAS-S.A. 53: Tony Allen scored 18 of his 19 during an eight-minute spurt that spanned halftime, sparking the host Cowboys' rout.
Oklahoma State had little trouble pulling away from the undersized Roadrunners, who had no players heavier than 225 pounds, and outscored them 46-6 in the paint.
UVA 86, MINNESOTA 78: Elton Brown scored a career-high 26 and ignited a tiebreaking 13-1 run to lift the host Cavaliers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The victory gave the ACC a 7-2 edge in the series this season, the fifth time in as many years it has prevailed.
S. CAROLINA 70, CITADEL 38: Renaldo Balkman scored 15 and Carlos Powell added 13 for the visiting Gamecocks. South Carolina is 7-0 for the first time since Frank McGuire's eighth season as coach in 1971 and has won 50 of the past 52 meetings with the Bulldogs.
ARKANSAS 77, ORAL ROBERTS 71: Jonathan Modica scored 18, 14 in the second half, and made two key steals in the final two minutes as the host Razorbacks won their first close game of the season.
ALABAMA 79, CHARLOTTE 72: Earnest Shelton scored 22 and Antoine Pettway added 13, all in the second half, to help the host Crimson Tide hold off the 49ers after blowing a 15-point lead.
VANDERBILT 86, IUPUI 68: Mario Moore hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 as the host Commodores handed Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis its first loss.
MISS. ST. 76, LA.-MONROE 52: Winsome Frazier scored 19 to lead the host Bulldogs.

NEW ORLEANS 69, TULANE 66: Kyle Buggs sank a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the corner to lift the host Privateers.
Tulane worked the clock down with the score tied at 66 and 42 seconds left, but Marcus Kinzer's 17-footer was just short and Quincy Davis' tip attempt missed, giving the Privateers the ball with eight seconds to go.
New Orleans drove hard upcourt and A.J. Meredith found Buggs in the corner for the winner.
MEMPHIS 84, TENN.-MARTIN 64: Sean Banks had 24 points and Rodney Carney added 21 as the host Tigers dominated in the second half. Banks entered averaging 12.3 points.
UAB 90, BIRM.-SO. 67: Ronell Taylor scored 15 and the host Blazers used depth and relentless defense to wear down the Panthers. Alabama-Birmingham built a 31-point lead early in the second half.

RICE 62, HOUSTON 52: Michael Harris had 22 points to lead three players in double figures for the visiting Owls.
