Chargers cap year with Cup

The Clearwater Chargers under-12 girls soccer squad won the President's Cup by defeating Team Boca on April 4.

Clearwater advanced to the state final after beating Seminole Saturn 3-0. The championship was decided on penalty kicks after regulation ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Chargers finished with a 41-1-2 record, including the USA League Division I title, Disney's AAU President's Cup, the CFU Classic championship and the Largo United Halloween Invitational crown. They were runners-up in the Clearwater Coca-Cola Classic, and posted 28 shutouts and 175 goals.

Team members were Jolie Annichiarico, Kaley Blades, Jamie Crouch, Lindsey DiLeonardo, Corinna Dyl, Amber Famiglietti, Kaitlin Frehling, Melissa Hale, Evgenia Hankenhoff, Madison Hansen, Lauren Ince, Casey McKeon, Kendall Narum, Samantha Newhaller and Katie Sienkiewicz. They were coached by Sergei Stopek and managed by Randy Hansen.

The Countryside Lightning's under-11 girls captured the Region C championship.

The Lightning, with players from Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor and East Lake, didn't allow a goal in the playoffs and defeated the Lakeland Shockers 3-0 in the title game.

Countryside's Premier U-12 girls advanced to the Region C championship for the third straight year. The squad, coached by Dave Orr, won all eight games in the tournament before losing to the Clearwater Chargers 3-0 in the final.

The Lightning, which took the region's crown a season ago, played in the USA U-14 Division I bracket. The team competed in tourneys in Atlanta and Raleigh, N.C., and was a finalist in the Orange Classic in Fort Lauderdale.

The Lightning was comprised of Shannon Walisch, Alicia Jacobson, Christie Jauch, Stephanie Ferro, Jordan Luther, L.J. Foster, Catherine Brinkman, Taylor Richardson, Colleen Lynch, Kimmy Cohn, Queli Ornelas, Mary Ann Karlin, Taylor Batye and Ashlin Cook.

APOLLO GYMNASTICS: The program's Level 7 team finished second in the AAU state meet in Orlando.

Joey Cortesse and Noah Pollack turned in strong performances, capturing third in the all-around competition. That included a first on the rings and third on the vault, parallel bars, high bar and pommel horse for Cortesse and a second on vault and pommel horse for Pollack.

Matthew Endo, Trey Lago and Tylor Moore placed fourth in all-around.

Endo was second on the floor and pommel horse, third on vault and fourth on parallel bars. Lago won on the pommel horse and parallel bars, claimed second on vault and high bar and fourth on floor. Moore was first on the rings and fourth on parallel bars and high bar.

Other place-winners were Casey Beck (second, high bar), Marcus Atherholt (second, rings) and Nicholas Kelton (fourth, pommel horse and rings).

TURNERS: The Tampa Bay gymnastics squad finished its season in the Level 9 Eastern National Championships in Virginia Beach on April 24-25.

Briana Melander was sixth on the balance beam and all-around. Alyssa Adrian placed fifth on the bars and 12th all-around. Jordann Windschauer finished sixth on the beam, and Lindsey Weber took second on the beam and ninth on floor.

Also competing were Alyssa Collins and Brittany Hunt.
