FHP suspects medical issue killed driver

A dead man was discovered in his car Friday morning, after the car crashed through a fence and hit a building the night before. At 7:20 p.m. Thursday, the security alarm went off at U-Store, 4867 Commercial Way. The alarm reset itself, and the next morning, when employees came in, they found Carl Marcocci, 68, of Clearwater dead in his car. The Florida Highway Patrol was still investigating what caused his death, though troopers don't think it was the crash. "The damage to the vehicle and building isn't conducive to the injury he sustained," said Trooper Larry Coggins Jr., an FHP spokesman. Coggins said troopers were awaiting autopsy results, but they suspected that the cause of death had to do with a medical condition.

Observation deck coming to center

The Southwest Florida Water Management District's Coastal Rivers Basin Board has approved funding for an observation deck at the Springs Coast Environmental Education Center on the Weeki Wachee River. The basin board will cover $75,000 of the expected $110,000 cost; the remainder will be paid by the Hernando County School District, which staffs and maintains the center. The deck had been part of the original plans for the center, but funds were not available when the center opened in 2005. The basin board contributed $780,000 toward the design and construction of the center, which includes classroom laboratories, a multipurpose room and trails with access to the river. The center is used to help provide environmental education for Hernando schoolchildren.
