Bright colors, jutting angles characterize artwork
By BARBARA L. FREDRICKSEN
© St. Petersburg Times, Years ago, when she was a teenager, Lynn Kavanaugh created wall hangings, planters and even a gun rack out of macrame. Now the mother of two children, Ms. Kavanaugh prefers creating abstract forms from brightly painted wood blocks and strips of half-inch thick slats curled and twisted in and out of themselves. A dozen of her works will be on exhibit in the Upstairs Gallery at Pasco Art Center through September. "When my children came along, my art was confined to refinishing vases and wall art for my home," Ms. Kavanaugh said in her biography. "I rediscovered my art after moving to Florida and making an attempt to quit smoking. I thought of it as something to direct my attentions to instead of smoking." Some observers might say that her art smokes. It certainly engages the eye, with its bright fuchsia and teals, silvers and golds and its jutting angles and soft curves. Ms. Kavanaugh's work is displayed at several area businesses and at galleries in St. Petersburg and Dunedin. She won second place in sculpture at a recent Tarpon Springs Art Association competition. Her work has been seen at arts festivals in New Port Richey, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Sarasota and Tampa. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
