DADE CITY -- A Dade City woman was identified Thursday by the Florida Highway Patrol as the victim in a fatal collision Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say Mary Ashbrook Frye, 49, of Ashbrook Road, was driving south in a 1997 Dodge pickup truck about 3 p.m. Wednesday on Old Lakeland Highway south of Clinton Avenue. She collided nearly head-on with a northbound Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by Eric Joshua Briscoe, 21, of Mundbury Drive, Dade City, authorities said.

According to the FHP report, Briscoe, for unexplained reasons, allowed his truck to cross the center line. The front left of Briscoe's truck struck the left front and side of Frye's truck.

Witnesses said Frye appeared to have died at the scene.

Briscoe was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa where he was treated in the emergency room and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The wreck closed Old Lakeland Highway for at least four hours.
