Seeking "order from chaos"

With "Landscapes of the Mind," a show of abstracts by Richard Protovin opening Saturday, 531 Central Fine Arts moves to the top echelon of area galleries exhibiting the best area artists.

Protovin, who lived in St. Petersburg, exhibited widely here and abroad before his death in 1991 at age 46. He was founder of the animation program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he taught.

He was comfortable shifting from the restrictions of animated films to the freedom of abstraction. Seeking to create, in his words, "a new order from chaos," he painted works such as Birth'n, shown here.

Also in the show is his "City Scapes" video series, filmed in the 1980s, dealing with change, decay and re-growth within the lower west side of Manhattan, including the World Trade Center.

The exhibition is at 531 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, Saturday through Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Opening receptions are 5:30-9 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10. Information, (727) 822-2787 or www.531central.com.
