Current movies recommended by the Times
1. Mulholland Drive -- David Lynch returns to twisted form with a film noir mystery that's even more perplexing after it's solved. Equal parts brilliant and exasperating.
2. From Hell -- Twin brothers Allen and Albert Hughes depict a menace to another society: Jack the Ripper. Johnny Depp stars as an opium-addled psychic.
3. Iron Monkey -- Martial arts mayhem defying gravity and logic. Directed by Yuen Woo Ping, choreographer of fight scenes in The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
4. Training Day -- Denzel Washington's raging portrayal of a corrupt narcotics cop is one of the year's best performances. Ethan Hawke co-stars as a naive rookie in a stylish crime yarn.
5. Serendipity -- Strangers in the night leave their possible reunion to fate. John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale are the best romantic comedy couple of the year so far.
